The Relay

Relay LogoThe relay, entitled Never Ignore, Never Forget, is an initiative of eight students from Wichita, Kansas to raise awareness of past and on-going genocides. In addition to raising awareness of genocide, the group has also set a goal of $100,000 to aid the civilian protection program in Darfur, Sudan sponsored by the Genocide Intervention Network. Sponsored by Davis-Moore Auto Groups and working closely in collaboration with STAND: A Student Anti-Genocide Coalition and the Genocide Intervetion Network, the relay team has strong support to make the event a success.

The relay will start in Wichita, Kansas at Wichita High School East on June 2, 2008. The East High Darfur Action Group, known for divesting Kansas government funds from Sudan, will host a send-off event from the school at 9:00 a.m. from the front lawn. After approximately two weeks on the road, the relay will end in Washington, D.C. Although tentatively set for June 20, 2008, the finishing date may change based upon the performances of the runners and weather conditions.

There will be nine runners in the relay: Nathan Alexander, Aaron Gurley, Michael Gurley, Matthew Heck, Adam Heil, Jacob Heil, Adrian Love, Chris Parker, and Kiet Tran. Each runner will run approximately 13 miles every day. They will run one at a time and the baton will be passed to the next runner upon the completion of each runner’s respective 13 miles. Combined the runners will be running roughly 104 miles a day.

Garage Sale

On the Saturday before we left, the Dunns held a garage sale to raise more money for the relay. Despite the terrible weather (hail and torrential rain), we made almost $1,500!
